About Us

At Integrity Kenpo our focus is to provide a structured self defense system for adults and children of all abilities.

We offer low-cost lessons to make the art of Kenpo Karate accessible to a wide range of people.

We want to see our members progress and become teachers themselves.

Proficiency can only be gained by hard work and with the correct attitude of wanting to learn. It takes time, practice and effort, but the results far exceed any physical ability to extend to mental, wellness and communicative skills.

All students follow a strict curriculum required for each belt promotion and will be instructed by experienced Kenpo Instructors who have themselves not only completed the curriculum but have been individually tested directly by Mr Ed Parker or people designated by him, ensuring that the level of proficiency is continually being held to the highest standard.

A belt grading structure is used to acknowledge each students progress through to the coveted black belt.  Upon joining, members will be instructed on the basics and self-defence techniques required which are to be performed prior to a physical grading to progress to the next rank.

As a member of our club there will be the opportunity to meet new people and socialise at various events. We participate in events in other countries, offering the possibility of travelling off-island.

We plan to host highly respected international instructors for seminar weekends, participate in training camps in other countries and prepare students to compete in large competitions.

We are proud to be associated with The Advanced Kenpo Training System (AKTS)

The Advanced Kenpo Training System (AKTS) was founded by John Sepulveda, Senior Master of the Art. Mr. Sepulveda has trained in Kenpo since the early 1960’s, studying directly with Senior Grandmaster Edmund Parker. Mr. Sepulveda was chosen by his students to lead them into the 21st Century with the formation of the AKTS.

Our Instructors

Nigel Romeril:  8th Degree Black Belt (Associate Master of the Arts).

I commenced Kenpo Karate in 1979 shortly after leaving secondary school following friends who had also recently started the art. I did not know what Kenpo was, apart from being ‘karate’, and thought a black belt was the highest grade – and now, in my 46th year of training, I understand how wrong I was.

In 1986 then in 1989 I graded for my 1st and 2nd degree black belt in front of our Senior Grand Master Mr Ed Parker following the recommendation from my then instructor Mr Graham Lelliott.  Following Mr Parker’s untimely demise in 1990 and Graham moving from Jersey to Fresno, California, I was lucky to already know Mr John Sepulveda (10th degree Senior Master of the Arts and President of the Advanced Kenpo Training System) having graded for my 3rd, 4th and 5th degree by him in 1993, 1996 and 2000, Mr Sepulveda agreed to be my instructor and has been ever since with the addition of Mr Edward Downey (10th Degree) from Celbridge, Ireland and head of the European Kenpo Karate Association.

I truly count myself lucky to have been associated and learnt from those individuals as mentioned above and of course others along the way.  Graham was instrumental in laying the building blocks of our understanding of Kenpo and encouraging (actually telling me) to travel and start taking seminars, the greatest lesson ever.  Mr Sepulveda just simply took me to a different level and continues to do so as does Mr Downey with his continued commitment, encouragement and enthusiasm that he gives so freely.

For me, Integrity Kenpo Karate is another chapter in my Kenpo journey.  Over the last 30 years, I have travelled and taught in Europe, Sweden, UK, Ireland, USA and New Zealand. I take pleasure in sharing the knowledge of Kenpo Karate with others, teaching and explaining how the art is put together.

Kenpo can be seen by many to be a difficult art to master, however with hard work and understanding it’s a great martial art system. And yes, you do need to put time in.  At Integrity we provide our members with a standardised base of knowledge and teaching while allowing preference, expression, and variable expansion within the Art.  It is our intention to provide a solid base to teach and learn.

The Art of Kenpo is widespread and diversified so can accommodate all individuals irrespective of their abilities so the art fits the person and not the person fitting the art which perhaps sets Kenpo apart from other martial arts.

Jon Allo: 5th Degree Black Belt

My Kenpo Karate journey started in 1984 when I saw an advertisement in the local newspaper for a new karate class starting at Les Quennevais School.

I had always had an interest in martial arts and had practiced judo for a number of years whilst at school and this new karate class was just what I was looking for. It was run by Mr Graham Lelliott. At the first class I attended, I was amazed at the self-defence skills, forms and katas, sparring and dedication displayed by the senior ranks and ‘Black Belts’ in the class. I wanted to be a black belt too!

After a few years, after I achieved my purple belt, I took a break away from the island to go travelling and my Kenpo journey was put on pause. But it never left me.

In 1998, whilst training at Jersey’s Fort Regent gym, I saw that Mr Roy Macdonald had a new Kenpo Karate school opening. And so, my Kenpo journey began again. I was invited to join the club at my purple belt level, but I felt it was important to start again from the white belt beginning.

Over the years, working with several instructors (most notably Mr Dave Williams), I achieved my 1st Degree black belt in 2003.

From there, I understood why becoming a black belt is not the end. Moreover, it is an understanding that this is just the beginning.

I was fortunate to begin training with Mr Nigel Romeril in 2014. Nigel’s skills, knowledge of the art and teaching style gave me a deeper insight into Kenpo Karate. As his student, I achieved my 4th Degree Black Belt at the 2016 International Kenpo Karate Association’s International & European Training Camp. It was a privilege to receive my 5th Degree Black Belt from Nigel in 2022.

I consider the very essence of Kenpo Karate is that Mr Parker, the creator of the system, continually professed tailoring the art to the individual and not the individual to the art.

I have been involved for many years in teaching Kenpo Karate self-defence techniques, sparring, and forms across varied age groups, organised and run self-defence courses and helped many students on their own Kenpo journey.

The Kenpo Karate system is continually being refined to make the art more effective in today’s world and my Kenpo journey continues with Integrity Kenpo Karate Jersey.

Brian Crossley: 5th Degree Black Belt

Well, I was one of those parents watching my child doing a Kenpo Karate class and thought why not? So I went into an adult class. I didn’t start Kenpo until 2006, so a late starter, at 48 years, but better late than never is what I say now! 19 years on and I’ve never stopped training, except on holidays and still managing to find a quiet corner.

I must say it has been a turbulent journey navigating through the system. When I went for Blue Belt in 2009 it wasn’t my best grading because I felt something was missing – that my external side of the technique was not in line with my internal side. There was a disconnect and I didn’t understand why.

So, I think this is when my Kenpo journey really started. ‘Internally’, I had to get an understanding of how I get the energy from the ground through the body out of the hand, or whichever exit point of choice and an understanding of the physics and science of how the body moves. So, I embarked on the practice of Tai-Chi, under Raymond Reid of the Jersey Tai-Chi Foundation. This has also given me an understanding of the spiritual side of Kenpo Martial Arts. After years of practice, I feel I can now take some elements of Tai-Chi into the Kenpo practice to give me the internal side to complement the external side of the art.

What have I got from my Martial Arts journey?

  • Discipline and self-mastery
  • Respect and humility
  • Balance, harmony and energy flow
  • Mindfulness and presence

19 years on and I wouldn’t change any direction of my personal journey.

Dawn Venton: 3rd Degree Black Belt

I never set out to become a Kenpo practitioner. Back in 2005, I brought my three children to their first class and agreed to join in—just for one session. That single class changed everything. I was instantly captivated.

From that moment on, I trained regularly, embracing every opportunity to grow. Over the years, Kenpo has taken me across the globe to training camps and competitions in Belgium, Ireland, Malta, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, the USA, and Mexico. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of learning from extraordinary instructors, both in Jersey and abroad, each one sharing their expertise with genuine passion and enthusiasm.

In 2013, I earned my 1st-degree black belt in front of a panel of Jersey black belts. Three years later, I tested for my 2nd degree before the IKKA Europe panel, and in December 2022, I proudly achieved my 3rd-degree black belt.

While my competition results have varied, the personal growth I experienced through preparation and performance has been invaluable. These lessons – discipline, resilience, humility – extend far beyond the tournament floor. Though my own competitive chapter has closed, I now find immense joy in coaching students, helping them prepare for competition and watching them develop skills that enrich every aspect of their lives.

Since 2021, I’ve been an active member of the IKKA Europe Events Group, contributing to the organisation of annual tournaments. I also serve as a board member and European Ambassador for International Women of Kenpo, and I’m proud to be a co-founder of Kenpo Connections.
